How social media can be useful in a disaster…
24 02 2011The New Zealand Herald has made a very good Google map of Christchurch following the most recent earthquake here which can be used to find a local triage centre, the nearest source of fresh water, or even a working ATM machine.
Also, people are being encouraged to leave a message on the Facebook profile page of relatives or friends who they know are safe, so that others can easily find out just by going to that page. This saves congestion on telephone or other communication systems.
I haven't heard of any uses of Twitter in Christchurch's case, but I do know that Twitter has been used in many situations overseas to pass useful, even vital, information on to other people.
I hope those who disparage new technology are paying attention…
On a more personal note, I am lucky that none of my friends or relatives living in Christchurch were injured in the earthquake, but, like most of New Zealand, my thoughts and deepest sympathy are there for those who have suffered a loss.
