American legal absurdities…

7 03 2010
…or, yet another reason why I’m glad I don’t live in the Orwellian dystopia the US is becoming.

#1:
Man imprisoned for buying comic books containing cartoon drawings of minors engaged in sexually explicit acts.
The guy is an anime nut, and has a huge collection of hundreds of manga comic books, only a minute percentage of which were pornographic.
“He was a prolific collector,” says the lawyer. “He did not focus on this type of manga. He collected everything that was out there that he could get his hands on. I think this makes a huge difference.”

#2:
Teenagers taking risque photos of themselves are prosecuted for violating child pornography laws.
A 17 year old boy and his 16 year old girlfriend engaged in sexual activity (legal in their home state of Florida), but photographed themselves engaged in this activity and the girl emailed the pictures to the boy.  Thus they are child pornographers.

Neil Gaiman writes about the bluntness of laws, and why we must defend freedom of (icky) speech.
Another interesting article here…
