My nephew and niece

30 03 2007

My nephew and niece

Together for the last time in a while.

Rowan has since made to arduous trip to Dubai with his mother, to join my brother already there.

Katherine remains here at home.

P.S.  Rowan can pull himself up to stand against things, and is nearly walking…

Those Whacky RIAA Fellows!

29 03 2007

I’ve just picked up on a most interesting story:

In the past the RIAA has persecuted the young, the old, those without a computer, and even the dead!

Just this month there has been a new furore about their most recent victim, and she isn’t even the person being sued. At ten, Tanya Andersen’s daughter is the youngest victim yet. She was seven at the time the RIAA alleges her mother was downloading music files.

Gotta love ‘em…

P.S. The same RIAA is claiming “victory” against internet file sharing, with an increase in legal downloads and a decrease in file sharing, despite evidence suggesting the opposite is in fact the case.

Wanker

28 03 2007

Wanker

My brother saw this lamborghini parked in the disabled spot very soon after arriving in Dubai. The owner of this car may be disabled, but I think this is highly unlikely - probably he is just a wanker…

More on Net Neutrality

12 03 2007

For quite some time I have suspected that my ISP (Telecom NZ) has been shaping traffic - specifically, my traffic.

I did some googling (keywords: telecom, “traffic shaping”, policy; limited to New Zealand websites) and came up with this interesting local discussion from the end of last year.

There were many other links, which, in summary, stated that Telecom has been traffic shaping packets in the plan I currently use, from when it was first introduced in December last year.  Apparently they stopped doing this at the end of last month.

Have since found another interesting blog article here that gives more information…

Here is Telecom NZ’s official statement…

Here is a story about it in a local newspaper…

I have not yet decided how I feel about this, or what to do.  I think I will investigate the NZ ISPs that do not massage their traffic, and quite likely transfer over to one of them.

“Spartans! Tonight we dine in Hell!”

Own the original series. Very good Frank Miller comic (if maybe embellishing strict historical accuracy). Has been made into a movie that is about to be released.

Here is the second trailer:

Here is an excerpt from the movie:

On the other hand…

5 03 2007

Which of these two versions of a certain Eurocheese number is better?

  1. the original in all its “Dr Who special effects” glory?

  2. or this truely cheesy fake LOTR/Lady Godiva version?
  3. Or perhaps people prefer the 2006 Australian cover?

Good SF authors

4 03 2007

Peter F. Hamilton’s homepage.

Where Lois McMaster Bujold fans hang out.

Cory Doctorow’s homepage. Most of his stuff can be downloaded in a variety of formats from here.

A perennial favourite - John Varley.

A webpage where Accelerando by Charles Stross is available for download.

Terry Pratchett’s home site (not strictly SF, but still very good).

Three Brits, two Yanks, and a Canadian. Guess who is who…

P.S. Favourite children’s fantasy author - Diana Wynne Jones.
